Riley’s shelter had a COVID-19 outbreak. Everyone was forced to relocate for two weeks to quarantine. Riley was not sure where to go, so they contacted GLAD. An advocate secured a hotel that provided food, drinks, and hygiene for Riley. The hotel also was able to send proof that Riley was in quarantine so they could return to the shelter after two weeks. But during two weeks in isolation, Riley almost relapsed into drugs, and called GLAD for peer counseling. With GLAD’s emotional support, Riley remained sober and quarantined for two weeks, then was able to return to the shelter and maintain eligibility to transition into a permanent housing program.

At the same time, Izel lost her job and her children’s schools closed, due to the pandemic. Izel called GLAD and an advocate connected her with school benefits (P-EBT), and connected the family with food and resources, including school supplies for the son when school re-opened. Meanwhile, Izel’s work employment card expired, and she could not afford to renew it. GLAD connected her with CHRLA, a local immigration agency, to help cover the cost of getting her card renewed. Things felt more normal again for her family.
