What is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month (NSHTPM)? NSHTPM is observed in January which is about the global issue of modern slavery and human trafficking. This month reminds us the ongoing fight against the violation of human rights and support the survivors.
What is human trafficking?
- Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel a person to perform labor, services, or commercial sex
- It affects people of all ages, genders, nationalities, and economic classes
What happens during the month?
- Communities learn about human trafficking and how to prevent it
- The efforts of those working to end human trafficking are recognized
- Resources are shared to help people learn how to help prevent human trafficking
- Social media posts are shared to raise awareness
The U.S. Department of State raises awareness domestically and abroad
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) provides resources to help people learn how to help prevent human trafficking
- The U.S. Department of Defense raises awareness and works to end human trafficking
- Other organizations, such as anti-trafficking entities, law enforcement, and community groups, also participate
Why is January chosen?
- President Obama declared January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month in 2010
- Each president since then has continued this tradition
