📽️ Part Two of the GLAD video series: Know Your Rights
Transcript:
Hey everyone! Did you know… that California is the only state where Deaf people have interpreter rights even at the tiniest businesses? Yup… even that one-person mom-and-pop shop!
A lot of businesses say, “We only have 5 employees — we don’t have to provide an ASL interpreter.”
Guess what? That’s false! Myth busted!
The Unruh Civil Rights Act says ALL businesses must give Deaf folks full and equal access.
Size does NOT matter… 1 employee? 3 employees? 10? Still required!
They can’t say:
Bring your own interpreter
We’ll just write notes
We’re too small for ADA
Nope nope nope!
And if they offer VRI? It has to be GOOD!
Not blurry, not freezing, not lagging like a 2005 video chat!
(Make a funny lagging impression for humor)
If VRI doesn’t work, they MUST switch to an in-person interpreter. That’s the law.
And you never pay for it — EVER.
Oh! And here’s a fun fact:
If a business violates your rights, the Unruh Act holds them accountable.
Your access matters, and the law backs you up.
So remember: small business or big business — your Deaf rights stay BIG.
