July is Disability Pride Month!

Disability Pride Month celebrates accepting and honoring each person’s uniqueness, viewing it as a natural and beautiful aspect of human diversity. It occurs every July to commemorate the ADA’s passage on July 26, 1990. The inaugural celebration was Disability Pride Day in Boston in 1990.

Ann Magill created the Disability Pride Flag in 2019 but redesigned it in 2021 with the help of people with visibility triggered disabilities for safety and accessibility. According to Ann on Reddit, the black field represents mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse. The diagonal band represents ‘cutting across’ the walls and barriers that separate the disabled from normal society, also light and creativity cutting through the darkness.

Here’s what the colors symbolize, in order of appearance from top to bottom:
Green is for sensory disabilities.
Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
White stands for non-visible and undiagnosed disabilities.
Gold/Yellow is for neurodiversity.
Red represents physical disabilities.
