Rental Assistance and Expiring COVID-19 Eviction Protections

Hello! This is an invitation to our second meet and greet with Disability Rights California’s (DRC) Deaf advocates – I am Callie and my colleague, Eric.

The topic will be about housing, because many of you have gotten a notice from your landlord about eviction. Many of you moved out of fear, self-evicting yourself. Don’t move out if you disagree with the notice from your landlord. If you feel it’s wrong, you can stay. Your landlord is responsible for going to court if they want to evict you. When they go to court, you will need to go, too, so you both can explain your sides to the judge. Then if the judge decides to evict you, the judge will send you a proper form, not from the landlord. With that form, you need to move. This information, plus more, will be shared in depth.

Second, many of you lost jobs or are struggling to pay your bills, including medical costs and child care, because of COVID-19. If you’re behind and unable to pay rent because of COVID-19, you have legal protections and your landlord cannot evict you. These protections will expire at the end of this month, September 30. So what do you do now? How can you pay your landlord so they don’t evict you? There is a rent relief assistance program with a lot of money from the government to send to people. We will explain how to apply, and how to know if you’re eligible.

Third, after October 1st, what happens? Will your landlord be able to evict you? All this information will be shared with you on Zoom.

When? Friday, September 17 at 1:30 – 3:30pm PST. Hope to see you there!
