Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness (GLAD) provides a variety of communication services for consumers and agencies. These services include, but are not limited to, translating documents to sign language, qualified sign language interpreting, and free use of equipment in the Visual Communication Center during business hours. Emergency sign language interpreting services are also available 24/7 to meet medical, legal, or civil emergencies through LIFESIGNS, a subsidiary of GLAD.
Consumers work directly with GLAD Community Advocates to go over complicated documents and translate them into sign language. Translation services are available in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language (ASL).
A variety of assistive technology are available for consumers to use at no charge at GLAD’s Visual Communication Center (VCC) during business hours. The VCC features TTY devices, caption phones, and videophone (VP) booths with privacy curtains. Consumers can make an appointment with a Community Advocate for a demonstration and assistance with applying for free equipment.
The VCC was made possible with support from the S. Mark Taper Foundation, Sorenson Communications, and Purple Communications.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires government agencies, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public to provide auxiliary aids and services for effective communication with deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and deaf disabled individuals. Qualified sign language interpreting services are available through LIFESIGNS, a subsidiary of GLAD.
