STAND WITH GLAD IN OPPOSITION TO LAUSD’S DECISION TO CLOSE DEAF/HARD OF HEARING ADULT PROGRAMS

LOS ANGELES, CA – May 22, 2015 – GLAD stands opposed to Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) decision to close the only adult education programs for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, families and people affected by disabilities in the county of Los Angeles. The county has one of the largest deaf populations in the world and there are no other programs provided similar to Marlton, North Valley Occupational Center (NVOC) and Abram Freidman Occupational Center (AFOC).
American Sign Language (ASL) is the native language for many deaf people, and these programs use it to teach how to communicate in English. These critical programs also work with parents/families of deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind to open bridges of communication within families. Families, deaf and hard of hearing individuals and people affected with other disabilities depend on programs like Marlton, NVOC and AFOC. Removing educational opportunities puts the survival skills of multiple communities at risk.

The LAUSD Board is meeting at 333 S. Beaudry Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90017 in the Board Room on Tuesday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. Stand with us and show our power in numbers in opposition of removing paths towards self-sufficiency, language acquisition and opportunity. There is parking at the Visconti Garage, northwest corner of Miramar and Boylston (between 3rd and 4th street). American Sign Language Interpreters will be provided.
