Workshop: ASL signs follow formational patterns in rule-governed ways. When signs follow these patterns of production, they can be said to be “standardized” variants. When sign formations vary, it can be due to regional (or other) dialect influences or an individual’s idiolect (the way a person alone makes a sign).

ASL are produced using a set of formational parameters that include handshape, movement, location, and palm orientation. The degree to which an individual’s signs deviate from the “standardized” variants can affect the degree to which that individual’s signs are understood.
As sign language interpreters, we must be aware of the formational patterns of signs that we use in order to have mastery over one of our tools – ASL signs – and to be interpreters who create signs that are clearly articulated and easily understood.

This workshop is appropriate for working interpreters of all levels including pre-certfied and IPP students.

About Cindy Herbst: Cindy has Deaf parents, has been certified by RID (CSC) since 1978, and holds a M.S. in Teaching Interpreting from McDaniel College (Westminster, MD). She worked for over 36 years as an ASL and Interpreter Education Instructor at Pierce College (Woodlands Hills, CA) before retiring in 2014.

Along with interpreting in a variety of settings (post-secondary, religious, community, and VRS), she has continued to serve as a mentor, workshop facilitator, and consultant for interpreting skills and knowledge development.

Light refreshments will be provided.

This workshop is sponsored by El Camino College, LIFESIGNS, RID, and ACET.

El Camino College is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for continuing education activities. This Professional Studies program is offered at 0.4 CEUs. LIFESIGNS does not discriminate in its professional growth programs. This workshop will be conducted in an environment of mutual respect and community learning.
