ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Regional Director, the Community Advocate will:
- Assist deaf and hard of hearing consumers in the area of communication access via Videophone, TTY relay, document translation, and other duties;
- Provide advocacy in the areas of Social Security, education, employment, consumer affairs, and others;
- Record statistics on a daily basis related to provision of services;
- Peer-counsel deaf and hard of hearing consumers with problems related to personal and family adjustments, finances, employment, food, clothing and housing;
- Assist deaf and hard of hearing consumers with independent living skills;
- Educate the deaf and hard of hearing community about various laws and programs benefiting and protecting the rights of deaf persons such as Department of Rehabilitation, Social Security policies and the ADA, etc;
- Assist with consumer workshops, trainings for service providers and community events;
- Provide Information and Referral regarding updates of the Directory of Resources;
- Refer consumers to community resources and other organizations;
- Secure information and resources beneficial to the department pertaining to social security, immigration, mediation, etc. through workshops, seminars and through networking with other agencies;
- Some typing and other light office duties as necessary; driving is required as part of the job;
- Perform such tasks and responsibilities as may be assigned.
B.A. or B.S. degree with two years of related experience. Must be fluent in Sign Language. Applicants must have the ability to work with a diverse multi-ethnic population. Applicants must have background knowledge of various laws and programs benefiting and protecting the rights of deaf and hard of hearing persons, such as Department of Rehabilitation regulations and Social Security policies, ADA, etc. Applicants must possess the ability to assess and adapt sign styles to fit the communication needs of the individual who may be deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind or recently deafened. Applicants must possess the ability to function in a team environment and be willing to drive long distances to outreach offices as needed. Applicant must be a flexible self-starter and a resourceful team player; detail oriented with strong organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills; the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and sometimes with competing deadlines; excellent interpersonal skills and at all times be capable of maintaining a cooperative relationship with co-employees, directors, employers, community members, other agencies and the CEO. Punctuality and reliability are required. Involvement with deaf/hard of hearing community and strong English skills are desirable. Applicants must be able to handle confidential situations; have the ability to work independently, take initiative and thrive under pressure in a fast paced environment; must have a professional demeanor, including phone manners and must be knowledgeable of office procedures.
Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance as required by law.
